Hey Guys,
I'm cnc turning C18200 Copper. The problem I'm having is chip control. The chips are coming off very stringy. I'm running 450 constant surface feet with a .01 feed rate. I have set the max rpm to 1750 and I am turning down from 2" dia. to .625 dia x 4.937. I am using a live center and the rougher and finish tool is a VCGT 332-AS IC20. It is a high polish insert for turning copper and al. I would like to get an almost normal chip. Anybody have any experience with this type of copper? Should I increase the depth of cut and slow the rpm down? Depth of cut is currently .05 per side.
Thanks,
Jim
Compared to free machining Brass alloy 360 FC, with a machineability rating of 100 ( as good as it get's, C18200 has a rating of 20. Go back to the basics.Try increasing the feedrate (go up 1.5 times). I've experienced what you did with the polished inserts (DCGT 3251) perhaps another cutter geometry for roughing may work better. Worse comes to worse go to the insert cataloge and pull the speed/fedrates/doc's for the material and insert you are using.
