I am brand new to machining, and the company I work for just purchased a Hurco VM1 to eventually machine A2 steel. We have some books on speed and feed (Machinery's Handbook 28th Edition) but it is not answering all the questions we are coming across. Is there a place that you guys look when you just don't have the experience to just know what settings will work? For an example, say I need to face mill the end of a piece of 1045 1" dia round stock. What is a good depth for each pass (.1", .01")?, What if the machine leaves a rough finish? What if it just sounds rough? If there is a book or website that we need to buy or consult that would be great. Thanks Brian |

| Sandvik offers a free online metal cutting course at http://www.sandvik.saloneit.com/student/ They send you a big extremely detailed text book in about 2 weeks and I highly recommend it to anyone serious about making chips! Only catch is you have to be a USA resident and you must finish the online tests in 6 months or they will supposedly charge you 150 bucks (but they don't have your credit card number so I don't know how they will get the money) |
