id turning on stainless

well im just hoping to get a few suggestions.

i was supposed to machine a drives shaft with a 2.5 inch diameter ID and when i started working on the stainless (316) everything just went to hell in a handbasket.

the chips got pushed into the part while i was boring and accumulated so that my insert started disintigrating.

i was going about 200 rpm and about .010ipm with a .07 depth of cut on a htaci seiki cnc.

by the way my boss made me use a 1.375 drill to start the hole. which i thought compounded the problem. any suggestions would be appreciated even slap me upside the head !!!!

i dont mind criticism i just want to learn

You should try to use a canne cycle (on my citizen machine it's G74) to break up the long chips or learn how to create a marcro program for the same purpose. By the way, I see your boss is the biggest problem.

You most likely work hardened the material. The only way to solve that is to take a large enough cut to cut under the hardened scale. As far as speeds and feeds go, your feedrate sounds good (maybe push it a little harder for roughing) but your rpm is WAAAAY to slow. At 300 sfm - which is a good round number for 300 series stainless - you should be at roughly 900 rpm.

316 can be a bear to cut if you're not sure where you need to be. Good luck
