ok, im looking for ideas. Im currently attending school for machining and our last semiester (coming up) we have to build an Advance project of our own design. The only rules are it has to be multiple pieces and assemble, the tighter the tolerances the more points awarded. I need some ideas on what to do. anything would be great. FYI: I have access to a VF-11, FlowJet, VF-1, Mini Mills, VF-2s, VF-3s, SL-20s with barfeed, Grinders, Small Electrode EDM and Wire EDM. So lets here some ideas. Thanks |

| Maybe Make a Suspension Assmbly, or part of it, like a Bearing block with some mock axle going through it and then you could attach like a mini rim n hub or something. If you gotta pay for it yourself it'd be justified to make everything except the axle out of Aluminum. Or you could make a steering column assembly, a bearing mount with a colum going through it and you could turn n mill your own sterring wheel, you could also cut fancy dsigns into the weel with the other machines you've got access to. You'll get your tolerances from having to house bearings and you could really just go nuts on a steering wheel or rim & hub design

| Make a weapon, rifle, pistol...check out.. http://www.cncguns.com/ Crossbows are popular. Any kind of cannon is always fun! Give it a 3" barrel that threads into the reciever and a press on suppressor. A toolmakers vise.

This strikes me as being a bit contradictory.

| most traditions became tradtions because they work and the tradition for someone learning metalworking is to make tooling. It works because you need it and making quality tooling pushes the envelope on ability. I'm surprised that your head isn't already full of stuff you'd like to design and make; new improved radius dresser, radius turner, harig type fixture, boring head, grinding vise, sineplate system, taping head, slotting head, and on and on and on..... or am i missing something and those wouldn't qualify? |

well for example last year one of the guys made a complete skid for his snowmobile. So im looking more for and idea, not a flat out blueprint or mastercam file or something. as far as the some of the tool things, ive made a grinding vise, radius tool, simple shim punch, fly cutter. A lot of those were projects that we already had to make for grade. I work at a shop right now running FlowJet and SL-20 so i see parts come and go, but nothing is really sparkin me of something i really wanna make myself. |

| why did yo make it yourself. you can buy a suitabe one or closed one.and then fix on it. if there are some fault.and then you do it youself.

| Seriously though, do you have a 5 axis? A turbine wheel would be a cool project. Not difficult to draw(assuming it doesn't have to be effiecient, figured I'd specify before I get my ass reamed), would take a little time to cut though. Last edited by mc-motorsports; 01-08-2009 at 01:01 AM. |

| No I don't have access to a 5 axis at school or work. The gun would be cool but I can already hear my teacher now. "great idea but how the hell would I explain that one to the board?". Although I saw that silencer for the .22 on that cncgun site. Wouldn't mind makin me one of those LOL. |
