Hi folks, Can anyone tell me if they have ever used a cnc machine to polish a surface? We are machining a mold for a lens with a series of tiny grooves and wish to polish each one of the grooves. The tip of the polishing bit would preferable be a 1mm ball nose. Can anyone suggest anything or any alternative ways to polish this mold in aluminium without losing the sharp profiles of each groove? Scrap. |

| first of all, aluminum is not the best choice for fine detail which needs a lens quality high polish, usually hardened tool steel, stainless or s-7,the only way i would do it if i had to would be take a small peice of cast iron and cut the form on it and use that with a fine diamond compound,we use a dme profile,or dipofile,to move the cast iron form back and fourth, cast iron is soft and is porrous to hold the compound,on alunimun if u use anything other than diamond compound u will scratch it,good luck, thats my 2 cents |
