    CNC Knurling

Hello all users First time poster. We have several 3/4 inch handrails that are 48 inches long. These handrails requires knurling 2 inches from each end and a 2 inch space in the middle. Everthing knurled except for 6 total inches. Have never done knurling on a cnc before. We have a 40 inch travel Leadwell lathe. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank You,
    Gary

First you need to get a Knurling tool. Has 2 wheels with slanted (45 deg) raised edges for cutting. But it doesn't really cut it just presses into the metal and makes a Diamond pattern You have to match your speed and rev. so you end up with the Diamond raised areas. Look at the knurl with a loop and adjust as needed. You can get that info from the tool supplier.

You will probably have difficulty trying to knurl 3/4" diameter material along a length of about 20", knurling requires considerable pressure and material this small will flex away from the knurling tool.

It might be a good idea to look into cutting the knurl pattern using G32 and a 90degree vee tool if your machine supports G32.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

or get a cut knurling tool - they are just the thing - imo you'll need it as pressure kurnling some that long would be difficult for the reasons Geof describes
