Magical Material Stress Relief???

I just read this blurb about ultrasonic stress relief for materials:

Has anyone had any experience with products like these? It would seem like a tough sell for me. Let me know!

I cannot comment on tha Black Magic device but I know ultrasonic, aka vibratory, stress relief is an established technique, try Googling and you will get many hits.


Mainly my reason for posting is to thank you for a very handy link; I had never come across http://www.cncreport.com/ before but I think in the future it will prove very useful. Maybe you could start a thread telling people about it.

Like Geof, I can't comment on the Black Magic unit.

My experience was dealing with machining material (steel) after it had been "vibratory stress relieved". This is the old '70,s process mentioned above.

The process did surprise me, it worked for stress relieving. However, unlike thermal normalizing & stress relief, it didn't do anything to alleviate the hard and brittle areas caused by flame cutting etc.

Depending on your needs the Black Magic device could make sense. Thermal cutting/hardening problems, I don't think it works that well. Frankly, I'd have to see it done to my satisfaction.

Another thought, will your machining,grinding etc. put stress into the workpiece after initial stress relief? If so the Black Magic could make sense elsware in the process like just before finish boring or grinding.

ps on the subject of high frequency stress relief i know numerous engine builders in NHRA,ADRL that use this process with great results on engine comonents.

Thanks Tim. Yes, life has been especially busy. Unfortunately the Weekend Podcasts are at the bottom of the priority list. I will have it up and running to let everyone know what's been going on lately. Plus, I really want to do a series for owners and employees on how to get through this rough economy. we use one of this companies vibrating stress relievers.
i cant talk the technical side but i seen it work on parts that were moving all over the place that moved about 10% as much after this process.
saved us more than what it costs many times over

worth investigating to see if it will work with your application
