    emachineshop.com - bad experiences

    Hi,

    For the past 6 mos. or so I have been working with emachineshop.com on some various parts, nothing too large in size. I have been working with them partly due to the fact that I really haven't mastered SolidWorks drawings and emachineshop makes it easy to create the part with their software and then you get immediate pricing. Well, anyway, the end result has been horrible. Take in mind when I have them produce something for me, I never specify a finish. I am really new to this arena and thought emachineshop was the perfect solution, but everything they send back to me has weird things about it. For instance I had parts come back with some divot marks and a small deep groove in everyone of them. I would imagine these marks were created from holding the piece down, but I could be wrong. In general how should a machined part look before it gets a certain finish? Is it the norm to see parts machined with a couple nicks, divots, etc? The one thing I have noticed is emachineshop are just middle men. They are always referring to their supplier. This leads me to believe they have no oversight over the project as it is going on, plus I really don't think the salesmen are qualified enough to provide any real customer service. Have any of you guys used emachineshop and found the same issues I have?

    I was happy with the parts I had made through eMachineShop, but I did have them edge sanded, and the faces belt sanded, and the entire part anodized. You should check for those options in the software for your next batch. I was disappointed in the lead time, but it still beat making the the parts by hand.

    Eventually, I bought my own VMC and now I can work on parts as soon as I draw them up in OneCNC. Qty 1 or 2 -- no problem...

    What VMC did you end up buying? What type of belt sander did you use?

    I bought a used 1998 Fadal 3016L. To learn how to use it, I took a couple of semesters of night classes at my local community college (although they had Haas machines to learn on).

    Right now, I have an old craftsman belt-sander, but for the parts I'm making on the CNC I am trying to have the mill produce a good finish so not further operations are necessary.

    Good to know. I do wish emachineshop took more pride in their work, but I guess you get what you pay for. Ideally I would produce the parts myself, however I have no clue how to run a cnc machine.

    We are sorry the parts you received were not what you expected. The CAD software indicates that you need to specify a surface roughness if that is what you need. This is done in the Settings dialog for your reference. You were also offered vibratory finishing which can still be done. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact customer service.

    I would call customer service, but most of the time you call you get someones voicemail. What I want to know is why someone at emachineshop doesn't have the confidence to respond to my comments with a solution or explaination, ie addressing my concerns directly instead of glossing over the situation with a quick one or two sentence response. If emachineshop stood behind their work or their suppliers work, they would say something to the effect of "How can we help you get you something that you are happy with." I think based on a complaint from the customer, the job should be encouraged to be sent back and the emachineshop supplier that did job should fix the problems ASAP - not "We will get to it when we can". A couple concerns in particular are the deep grooves in that latest parts and little notches in the chamfering. I don't see how a vibratory finish is going to remove them. There are divots as if the pieces were held down by a clamp also. The divots vary in depth as do the grooves. They are all in relatively the same spot too.

    There is no confidence issue here. We do indeed stand behind our specs. If we missed something in QC please provide the nominal and actual value and number of parts involved - surface roughness in this case. We gladly accept return of parts that are out of spec.
