Anyone make set of wrenches?

Anyone machined up a set of open end wrenches before as a project ? Details/pics if so? Was thinking of making a decent sized set for a winter project.

cheers,

jer

jer,

I've made nut drives because the sizes were difficult to find - here is a model engineer sized set ....also i made a matching BA set....a worthwhile project imo. However making a standard inch or metric set of wrenches or sockets would be masochistic; you'd need to use a very tough (high tensile strength) steel which is expensive, machine the heck out of it and then its still not going to have the strength of forged or the durable chrome finish. imo you'd do better to make something unique or expensive to purchase and buy one of crappy snappy's high set of wrenches, fit and finish is like snap on and they're guaranteed for life

I hear what your saying. I just thought it would be fun to make a custom wrench that I use all the time. Like I always have a 12mm in my hand 8 hours of the day. Never applying much force on the small wrench, strength wouldn't need to be optimal in my application. Also your point about tooling taking a beating vs. the tool steel.

Nice set of nut drivers. WHat did you use machine/software wise and how long did you spend on them ?

Cheers,

Jer

by all means make away; if it’s for fun it doesn't have to be rational ......I just have such a long to-build list anything cheap and plentiful is an easy scratch

only software was excel to calculate proportions so the set looks all nice and pretty . Manual lathe work and some light forging, the hexes are forged around a die....oh yeah used the mill to make the dies for the ME & BA sizes that aren't available as allen keys. ends are case hardened, hexes are silver soldered onto shafts and shafts are loctited into the knurled handles
