Need Help!- How do I put in an SAE #6 port?

Hello all,

I need to put in an SAE #6 port into an aluminum part. Not familiar with these ports, and haven't even seen the tool yet, so not sure how to install.

Can't seem to find anything through google as to what to do, anyone able to help? I understand I'll need a 9/16-18 tap for it, so I'll be getting one of those too, but I assume I need to drill a hole first, just don't know what size. And what order the tools go in? I'm thinking drill, SAE cutter, then tap?

Try to google hydraulic porting tool. There's a few mfg.s out there.

MSC has porting tools in their catalog. You can look them up on their web site also. The tools they have are made by Scientific Cutting Tools. Here's a link:

Thanks for the info. I ended up getting a little help by calling the manufacturer of the tool i bought, as well as speaking with the customer to see what exactly they needed.

You are correct on the tool order.

Drill - Port - Tap

You might also need to pick up a depth gage and a diameter gage for the port. Some companies are very picky about their ports and others are a little more lenient. Most ports are sealed with a rubber O-ring so I've never understood why such tight tolerances are demanded by certain companies. The depth is usually not an issue for us. It's the diameter that always seems to be more problematic.
