Need help with model engine head machining

Hello,

I'm going to make a model engine from scratch and i want it to be special so i have some ideas i want to implement in my design. One of the ideas is to have a Coates head but i'm struggling with the machining of the slots that the ball valves rotates in. As you can see the head is made in two pieces sliced in the center line of the ball valves. The ball is easy to make but the slot in the head that the ball rotate inn is worse.

So, is the there a smart head in here that can come up with a solution or maybe an idea on how this company did it?

There are many ways to make that pocket depending on the type of machine you are using. Ball end mills on multi axis machines finished wiuth stone, or form tools.

Are you talking about the pocket in the ball? or the other half of the part that you have showing and the "slots" your referring to are for the shaft?

if its the latter just use the right size ball endmill and run a .0002-.0005 step over then polish one ball endmill will do the entire head Shaft slot/ ball slot and will give you a really good finish.

if its the pocket in the ball a ball endmill will work fine

of coarse you will need a cad system to program it on. any cnc 3axis mill will do it.

if your trying to do it on a hand machine you pretty much wont be able to.

Depends on the scale and equipment you have available.

If you could grind a consistant set of the ball valve forms onto a common shaft and support that shaft rigid enough to convert it into a cutter, using the same method to create the mounted ball valves then maybe. EDM would be my second suggestion. In any case, getting the profiles to match up without blow by may take some hand lapping with some clearences for expansion. Neat concept, but may not be realistic for scaling due to the slots and pockets in the ball itself.
