Looking for the right lathe bit?

Need help finding the correct lathe bit to cut deep into the face of a 2” piece of aluminum round with a post left in the center so I can’t just drill the center and use a boring bar.

Turning the prototype with a straight square end bit was not pretty, there has to be something better, I hope.

This would be possible with just a boring bar.

I do this stuff a lot.

In the conventional way looking at the end of the bar turning.

Starting close to the boss in the middle while the tool feeds to the left/outside plunge the tool in gradually at a rate that clears the back/clearance of the BB then continue until you come close to larger diameter profile.

Then reverse rotation of the lathe, move the tool into the space you have just turned then feed the tool to rough out the boss.

Just keep repeating this process until you complete the depth.

Then do a finish cut.

This is an ideal CNC job as it would be very repetitive.

the first question i always ask is how many of these items do you intend on producing yourself? if the answer is many then have a look at this range of iscar tooling -

http://www.iscar.com/ProductLines/Pr...LineDetailID/3

these tools are designed to do exactly what you are after however the only problem would be the cost of the tooling which at a guess could be about 200-300$AU, obviously if you are not in AU then the price will be different.

The other option you have if you are not doing too many is to look into the cheaper chinese tooling personally i don't recomened it as the tool holder is not finished as well as it should be i.e there is movment in the pocket, which will result in a poor finish and/or longer machining times.

and finially if your are only doing about 10 of the items i would also suggest fabricating one up in HSS as this is a cheap option. if your are going to go down this route have a look at the website above and copy the tool holder, as best as time will allow, and incorperate the cutting edge into this holder.

i hope this helps
if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask

Sorry rotonone.

That tool shown in the link would be totally unsuitable to make his part.

My method is achievable and there is no outlay.

Get a form bit ground out of high speed steel and plunge it in with lube. Have a tool and cutter grinder shop to make the form from a clay impression of the inside of the prototype.

In the same line as rotonone, also look into ThinBit face groovers. but as he said, it depends on how many you are running to make it worth it. For the size of the part (it looks fairly small) I would go with a ThinBit. I use them very offten and they hold up very well alot of different materials.

Do you have a CNC mill or mill and rotary table? If so, rough your pocket on the mill. Finish turn on lathe with a left and a right hand boring bar.
