Want to do climb milling, how?

    Hi all,

I have CNC X2 mill and most of the times I am doing conventional milling coz that how the machine was set up to do. Looking at the table from the front, when I do a pocket cut, the spindle spins clockwise while the end mill moves in a clockwise direction hence doing the conventional milling method.

Now I want to try to cut counterclockwise. This will give me the climb milling method. How do I do that? Thanks.

    Alex

climb mill vs conventional mill all depends on what side of the tool the stock is on

look at it like your driving a car ,the car is the tool ,your going forward and if the stock is to your right your climb milling

if the stock is to your left your conventional milling

your machine needs to be solid ,no backlash in the axis to climb mill

climb milling pulls the tool forward so it will cause the backlash to jump around which will result in a poor surface finish and chipped or broken tools

    Hi Alex
don't try and take to big a cut as when you go into the corner of the pocket the cutter will really try to move the machine. Also try to use a cutter that has a radius that is smaller than the smallest radius of the workpiece that you are cutting otherwise the cutter will tend to dwell in the corner. Finally try to ensure that the swarf is removed from around the cutter otherwise it will come back around again as the cutter rotates and this is not good for the cutter or surface finish.
