Ive got a 1930's Atlas 10 inch lathe. I have two tailstocks for it; the original and an indexing one. They both read .008" above the center of the spindle. I would guess that the spindle has worn that .008 away over the last 70 years of use. The spindle is shimmed properly now so the question is do I get new bearings? Id rather not grind the tailstock base down, or should I? Thanks. |

Is it babit bearing ? and is the spindel worn If so deal with that first I think homeshop machinest had a series on a lathe rebuld . The tailstock could be lowered by taking the two halves apart and grinding the flat where it slides to set taper or shim the head stock up off of the bed . search HSM's website for the story and look at it . Good luck Kevin |
