Machining Nitronic 50

I am trying to turn a part that is nitronic 50, turning it is no problem but drilling it is another story. Does anyone have any experience with this stuff. I tried 60 sfm f.008 got 2 inches deep and burned up the drill. Any help would be appreciated.

what type of drill are you using? most likely you will need a tool with coolant through too help prevent work hardening and have a peck in there somewhere to help flush chips out. heres some info I found on it.




MACHINING DATA
Carbide tools are suggested
for rates better than 50% of Type 304.
Machining Type Suggested starting rates are:
Single Point turning : Roughing - 0.15" depth, 0.015"/rev feed -175 SFM
Finishing - 0.025" depth, 0.007"/rev feed - 200 SFM
Drilling : 1/4" Dia hole - 0.004"/rev feed - 60 SFM
1/2" Dia hole - 0.007"/rev feed - 60 SFM
3/4" Dia hole - 0.010"/rev feed - 60 SFM
Reaming : Feed - same as drilling - 100 SFM
Side and Slot Milling : Roughing - 0.25" depth - 0.007"/tooth feed - 125SFM
Finishing - 0.050" depth - 0.009"/tooth feed - 140SFM
These rates are for carbide tools,
Type C-2 for roughing, drilling and reaming.
Type C-3 for finishing.

use HSS/bronze drills (dormer drill) PFX group.
use peck.
use coolant
RPM set as 150~200.

Figured this one out

Here is what I ended up doing and it worked beautiful.
I was drilling 1.5" hole 4" deep used 25sfm and f.008 worked great.

Yea Nitronic 50 is really a pain to machine. Slow RPM high chip load. If you have to pilot drill use as small a drill as you can.

I used to machine Nitronic 40 all the time, space shuttle main engine parts. Not really too bad, heavy feed, tons of coolant and a little bit of know how.
