Radius for hex-bolt pocket

Hi,

I'm a newbie and am building some prototype parts of UHMW on my HAAS TM-1 mill.

I have a pretty decent CAM system but I do not have much knowledge about mill tool selection.

I am making a pocket in the UHMW into which a 1-1/8 nut will fit into.

The corner radius of the nut is .010 the depth of the nut is at least 0.750 and I would like to be able to go deeper.

I think I need an end-mill that is .020" diameter to finish this part of the job. The question I have is; where on earth can I buy one or is there a better way to do this job.

Cheers,

Bloefeld

Just cut the pocket with a 3/16 mill (or whatever). Then take the mill and starting on a line from the center to the corner, move outwards to make a recess that the corner will fit into. Do this for each corner.

Unless this is decorative, there should be no need for the pocket to make contact with the corners.

Alternatives are to chisel out the corners or use a rotary broach.

I agree with lerman.

But to answer your question, your tool supplier should have no trouble with that. My preferred brand is Ultratool.
Mitsubishi makes some of the very best.
An extended length .02 cutter will allow a .06 DOC.

Hex Broach

I agree with lerman too. That seems to be the most popular solution when you need a polygon that size, just mill out the corner, it's really the flat you're after right? to hold the nut? If not, delivery on a 1.128 hex Slater hex broach is usually next day service. I guess that decision depends on how many pieces you're doing. Is your nut 1-1/8 thread or dimension?
