Industrial parts supply source for Canadians?

    Hi all,

Pleasure to meet y'all! I'm trying to build a CNC machine based on the great instructions from Stuart MacFarlan @ Instructables. I'm proceeding along nicely but I'm stuck at one particular point now.

I attempted to ordere parts from McMaster-Carr for my CNC project and appeared to be able to do so fine - the web page took my credit card, sent me a confirmation email, yadda yadda yadda. However, about two hours later, I received what was essentially a PFO letter from McMaster-Carr stating that due to "increasingly stringent export legislation" that they were canceling my order. This frustrated me, of course, but what's worse is I have no idea where to find a different vendor.

The parts of interest are listed below but I don't have enough experience to figure out what alternate names are, or what these are actually called, so that I can search somewhere else. If anyone in Canada (Calgary, perhaps?) has a suggested industrial supplier, or a US one that exports, please, PLEASE let me know.
    • Binding Screws for Wood Plain Steel Dowel Nut, 1/4"-20 X 12mm Length, Packs of 50
    • Steel Ball Bearing Plain Open for 1/4" Shaft Dia, 7/8" OD, 1/4" W
    • Trapezoidal Tooth Neoprene Rubber Belting .080" Pitch, Mxl Trade Size, 1/4" Width
    • Mxl and XL Series Timing-Belt Pulley 1/4" Belt Width, .685" OD, 20 Teeth

For example, any searches on the "rubber belting" give me nothing but automotive timing belts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,
    Donald Wheeler

GoodYear have a line of timing belts aimed at CNC type applications, also Breco Belt.
But You may want to order a Misumi Catalogue, mine arrived by purolator next day, treasure trove of hardware.

I'll concur that Misumi is a great source. Another alternative for the belts and bearings would be Motion Canada.

...Also Reid Supply has a good catalogue and for local service, In Calgary, I would expect that either Bearing & Transmission, Bearing Supply or B.C. Bearing have a presence, they can get almost all you need also.

Try "Rubberline".They manufacture belts and hoses and the have outlet stores that sell to the public.I had them make 5/8 x 1/8 kevlar flat belts for me at a cost of 5 bucks ea. Im sure the would have timing belts in stock.

Those aren't conveyor belts, they are standard timing belts. Any bearing and power train supplier should either have stock or be able to get those in less than a day.

For example - I would buy the binding screws at Fastenal and the other items at SB Simpson.

I do, however, buy most of my conveyor belting from Rubberline.

There I was..... Thinking I was Alone to have been TURNED DOWN by McMaster-Carr

Hope you can Complete the Project.... I am working on the same instructables CNC But having Faced McMaster-Carr Reject Email ! Blah blah......

I had to improvise fast !!! I plugged most of the Holes that were going to be either... Timing Belt Roller and Bearing holders... and Redesigned the Support Gantry to be Driven by Lead Screws ! and Coupled to a Moving Knot Jig and Elevated the Y Rails by 1" to Enable me to Feed pieces under the Y axis... Which you could only do with the X Axis

    Best of luck with yours....

It's well underway !!! and I can't wait to start using her...

Maybe Try Princess Auto for most hardware... if you have one near by? Lead Screws, Bearings, 1/2" Rods and Mill heads and I saw Timing Gears in the Surplus Aisles.

Some industrial supply vendors in Canada can get you products from McMaster-Carr at the same price within a perhaps longer leadtime in some cases. Lafco www.lafco.ca is on of them. Lafco has stores in Montreal QC, Quebec city QC and St-Catharines ON

    Best regards

BTW, Misumi now offer duty free/brokerage-included shipments to Canadian customers.

Fastenal has many industrial parts ranging from

    Fasteners
    Tools & Equipment
    Safety
    Material Handling & Packaging
    Chemicals & Paints
    Cutting Tools & Metalworking
    Electrical
    Abrasives
    Janitorial
    Lifting & Rigging
    Plumbing
    Hydraulics & Pneumatics
    Power Transmission & Motors
    Welding
    Metals & Fabrication
    All Fleet & Automotive
    HVAC
    Mil-Spec
    Office Supplies

They can lack of stock majorly in my area, practically EVERYTHING would have to be shipped in. And their prices can be pretty steep at times.
