    Stainless for hardening and grinding?

I need to make a stainless spindle that will need to hardened and ground, what material is good for this situation?

When grinding an ID of just under 2" what type of grinding stone should be used and were are they sold?

    Thanks
    Dennis

You could go with 17-4 PH, a preciptation hardening stainless steel that is easily machined in condition "A" (annealed) , and then heat treated at 900-1000F for 1 hr, and then air cooled to enhance it's yield point to around 160-180ksi. It's desirable to use as it's "legendary" for minimal distortion (in the .0001's), meaning you can turn to near finish diameter, heat treat and finish grind. Comes in nice round dimensionally pleasing round bar stock in many diameters, and makes nice chips. Extremely tough and dimensionally stable even in Annealed condition.

    regards
