I buy 304, 5 mm thick stamped product. In those part, there is a square hole. I need the dimension of that hole to be the same on each side of the part (+/-0.05). But the stamping subcontractor told me it's not possible since the exit hole is always bigger than entry hole. He can stamp with smaller punch to get an exit hole at the correct dimension then flip the part and stamp again with an other punch but still he can not reach the 0.05 mm tolerence. So I was thiking about broaching. But I have few knowledge about this methode. I saw it once, the guy had a special machine for broaching. I bought a general purpose 25 T C frame hydraulic press (I can push and pull with it). Can I just buy a broach tool; fix it on the ram and broach my square holes by myself? Or does this technique need a special machine? Also I must not deform the part. It must stay flat on both side. Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions Last edited by Arnaudb; 03-29-2008 at 07:56 PM. |

| I used and made broaches years ago, mostly pull broaches because of the amount of metal we had to remove. The more material the longer the broach. Long broaches can be dangerous if pushed, they can break as they are brittle. You should not get any deformation of your part if the fixture and the broach are designed for the job. You can cut and burnish the hole to a very exact tolerance. You would start with an accurate round pilot hole in the work piece if location is important. What are the dimensions of the work piece and what material. I may be able to help. WJF

| The part is a kind of flat handle made of stainless steel 304, the thikness is 5 mm. My idear is to let the subcontractor stamp it (he also stamp the square hole) then I broach the square hole by myself to get the accuracy I want (+/- 0.05 mm on each side). I don't think I will have to remove lot of material because the stamping subcontractor can reach +/- 0.5 mm. WJF, you said you produce the broach by yourself. What kind of material did you used? I have got no idear about the profile to use... |
