OK.. well... I recently accepted a job offer at Great Plains Manufacturing here in Kansas as a machinist running a Doosan MV 4020. Obviously this is a mill. Anyways, I have no experience running a CNC mill but have been taking notes and after 2 days of working and training am finally learning how to switch tools ( I believe I have that down ), altering code (still working on that), and I have edge finding down (I believe), and touching off ( I believe so too ). Anyways, was wondering if anybody knew of any (free) websites for tutorials on how to run these machines correctly as well as proficiently. Something I can do on my off time so I can go to work better prepared. I love this job, it's great, and I get a sense of accomplishment. Pays exceptionally well. Thank you in Advance! Mark |

| Was just hired as one. Machine Handling... Touching off, Zeroing the machine, Telling the machine the X0-Axis and Y0-axis // G55,G56... and the like. Anything that would touch off on these points and everything else that I can use for a study guide would be greatly apprecited! BTW, I am in this for the long haul, very enjoyable job. It was only my third day today, and I ran the machine pretty much unsupervised with minimal help on minute things such as pressing reset when the M/C Alarm was flagging. Little odds and ends I forget cause they are small, but other then that, I have the bulk of operating the machine well underway. But if the information you guys provide includes this stuff, that is fine, I will slip and forget I am sure. Thank You!!! |

| Hi You are embarking on a great journey.Best wishes. I'd recommend looking for some traing material in the libray of a local technical college, or see if you can convince your employer to pay for a night course (intro to machining etc). You need to get a handle on the basics, otherwise you will be lacking the foundation that you will need to move ahead later on. regards |

| Um, no one has mentioned the basics of metal cutting like calculating feeds and speeds, and cutting strategies and metallurgy?????? These are all important to the trade. In my geographical region, you better have your papers or be a journeyman if you are gonna call your self a machinist. And that takes years. Some of the other doods, younger and older(Hu and Geof) will still admit to learning new things everyday in this trade. It never ends. Good luck with your new position. I'm a bit leary when you say you forget the little things, cause they are just little. A "." may be a little thing, but if you put it in the wrong spot, it can make the difference between having a good day at the office, and being kicked out the door. Mind the small details, and you will be fine. just my $.02

| I do not mean forget as in to say... "Oh Sh*%, I should of done this or that!" More like, "Okay, I've done this, now it's time to do this.. and crap, I forget... Oh yeah... here we go" I am from the Salina Area... Programming? I don't know how much programming that I will do. I do know how to alter code. I will be on my way to learning alter speeds/feeds here before too long, so says my trainer. They say it's taken about 2 weeks on average for someone to grasp and mostly remember everything I've done in 3 days. This is amazing. No websites as to "tutorials/study exam" type material? Mark |
