Embarassing newb question

So I got what looks like a nice Rohm 1mm-25mm or so keyless chuck from my uncle when he passed away (along with other tooling), and I want to use it on my cheapie chinese lathe. Problem is, it has a 3/4" arbor in it, and I need it to fit a #3MT. I got a #3 MT to mate with the chuck, but I have no idea how to get the current arbor out. I see there is a collar and set screw (which I loosened), but how do I get the dang thing out? I know its just a friction fit, but what do I do - beat it with a hammer? - That sure doesn't seem right!

TIA

arbor

usually a punch is inserted into the jaw area with it fully open. this will allow access to the back of the chuck. then you can tap out the arbor....using a brass hammer or such.

arbor

Im a newbie too. I had a similer strugle and used a automotive ball joint fork. put it between the pressed in bit and the back of the chuck. set the whole mess on a 4X4 piece of wood. tapped the fork with a hammer and the taper of the fork popped the two apart. The chuck wouldnt allow me to open and tap through the center as it was not through. Worked for me and didnt damage the chuck.

Thanks for the ideas... it is just as ugly as it seems! The rohm chuck seems to have a backing plate in it, in which case I can't use a punch (I'll go look closer). I also don't have a ball joint fork (got new-fangled cars

Thanks.

You need a wedge set to pop the shank out of the chuck. Here is a link to Rutland Tool Supply and the item similar to what you need.

YEah, I guess that is what I need. I suppose I could just machine something up tho eh! Now that I know the method, I'll "git er done".

Thanks all.

I ordered those little wedges, and naturally they don't quite fit right. Worse, they don't have enough stack height to the it apart - I may be stuck and have to get a new chuck
