Current Scrap Metal Prices in Florida

Last week I was at a machine shop in my neighborhood, when their Scrap Man showed up to take their chips. I watched as he loaded everything on to a large electronic scale in the back of a box truck with a lift gate.

They took all types of metals, and handed the owner a wad of cash! So I asked him for a business card!

That evening, I drew a map to my place, along with my address and faxed it to the scrap guy. He called the following morning and we scheduled a stop at my place.

So here is the list of materials he took, the weights, and the price/lb:

Extruded Aluminum Solids, 150lbs, $.65/lb = $97.50
Aluminum chips, 52lbs, $.45/lb = $23.40
#1 copper, 34lbs, $2.25/lb = $76.50
Brass chips & solids, 24lbs, $1.10/lb = $26.40
Dull/broken carbide, 2lbs, $2.50/lb= $5.00
Stainless chips & solids, 20lbs, $.60/lb = $12.00

Total cash = $240.50

Now I had no idea Carbide was worth more than Copper!

This happened to a mate of mine who's a director of a fairly large engineering company:

Truck appears at front gate to collect the skip with all the scrap chips etc, me mate actualy helped him load it. Truck dissapears and is never heard from again lol.

Certainly taught him a lesson

The only thing I see out of place is the carbide price.

Kenametal will give you a prepaid shipping label to ship that stuf to them directly and I believe they are paying around $8.00 per pound last I saw.

Other than that it looks pretty decent.

No no! lol, he wasn't a scrap dealer, just a gypsy that went round folks mahine shope and stole their scrap- some amount of front though lmao.

FYI - I got $5.50/# yesterday for my carbides

I separate my 6061 from the rest of my aluminum. A couple of weeks ago I got $.85/Lb.

I can't believe how the price of brass has gone up since the spring, almost triple. Now if red brass would do the same.

Now that the financial world is in turmoil, the prices for recycled metals has fallen very low! I have spent a little time in Google looking for the current prices, and this is the most informative page I've found so far!

With aluminum chips going for $.1/lb, it looks like a good time to buy them as opposed to selling!

Anyone have better prices in there area or country?

I sold a some scrap aluminum to Atlantic Scrap just down the street from Liberty and got .10/lb for chips and .30 for solids. The price has fallen out of the market in the last moth along with the stock market. A couple of months ago, copper was 1.30 for chips.

can we recycle our own chips by melting them down and using them for a casting or non-structural item?

as i am buying at $3.50 lb it makes more sense to recycle your own chips into something rather than giving them away to the recyclers.

i have been thinking of this for a month or so since the last time i delivered a load of chips to the scrap yard.
any one have any ideas?

Melting chips may not be very successful on a DIY scale. As I understand it the recyclers use either a vacuum furnace or melt them under an inert gas. The chips have a lot of surface area and a lot of crud stuck to them and just melting in the presence of atmospheric oxygen results in a lot of the aluminum being oxidized and lost.
