I need to make this part, and i'd like to make it in two setups. First to remove the excess material, drill holes and chamfer, cut outside, and the undercut. Second operation simply face off the back side. I'm having trouble thinking of a way to make the undercut on this part. Aside from having a tool custom made, do you guys have any ideas of a tool that can make this undercut? The part is 316 ss. thanks |

| I copied one of your pictures and made an addition. Black outline is a lathe internal threading tool. Blue outline is a lathe internal grooving tool. With a bit of luck and a bit of tweaking coordinates you should be able to get the profile you need. The 30 degree flank will need two or more cuts because the threading tool will probably not be long enough.

| The threading tools that go in a grooving tool holder have the profile I showed. It is possible you would need to grind a relief on that side but that will be a whole lot easier than getting an entire tool ground.

Put the insert tool boring bar shank in an endmill holder or collet? For the square cut and maybe roughing the taper with a few steps how about a woodruff keyslot cutter? John |

| Roughing with a Woodruff may not work; the bottom of the slot is about 0.3 deep so you would need a large Woodruff cutter which would probably be too wide. KBC tools also has what they call double angle cutters that have the same profile as the threading tool. However, they have the same diameter limitation as the Woodruff. Using the lathe holder it would be possible to machine the holder back so enough insert protruded to do the cut. Again I have done this for undercutting large diameter coarse pitch interpolated threads.

| 9lrac9 I read the first two line at the top of the page and the first thought is to wire the part and then do the holes second opp. Unless you just like to get your rocks making tools and watching you machine run. And 316... what were you thinking.I used to make all these fancy and complicated setups and expensive tools for what... Unless your making a boat load. The new Sodick Wires are so fast and can cut in any axis. Nice part. 9lrac9 |
