.0625 face groove

having a little trouble with this one. i've been trying to do an internal face groove that is .0625 wide and .0625 deep but it starts at a depth of -1.000 on a diameter of 1.125 . I tried using a thinbit holder and only succeeded in breaking alot of inserts the material is 304 stainless. I also tried using the G74 face groove pecking cycle but to no avail. any pointers i'd appreciate them. thanks

A trepanning tool may be the answer.

Have you tried High Speed Steel yet??? In some applications your better off with a tool that can flex a little and absorb the shock. Flood Coolant, light pecks, low feeds and speeds.

Try these guys too, they make good Trepanning Tools.

Not to say anything but make sure you have a good clearance on the heel of the tool. If it is too big or too small it will break.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers!!!!

Depends on what you are using. Have you looked into face grooving inserts and holders?

Personally I would grind my own carbide bit if it were a small run, but having the holder system sure is a blessing if they are reliable that thin.

Sandvik options

can we see your code? when does it break? feed? speed? make sure your on center and the insert is correct for that diameter.I had a problem once when the tool made a series of rough pecks, then went to semi-finish without retracting enough in Z. Watch the tool run and see where its breaking. In 304 ss I would be at 280 sfpm, f.001 for the initial rough pecks. S320 f.002 for finishing. My guess is your tools off-center.

I forgot to add that End Mills with a few Flute ground off work great for Trepanning. Sorry this was missed, been on a Mill for a while.

Some times I wish our brains where like Hard Drives that could be Searched LOL.
