Makeshift Rotary Table.

Hi all,

Not sure if this idea had been done before but just to share with you all with what I did.

Been working to CNC my X2 mill and thought of a way to pocket a circular hole larger than my biggest drill bit. 38mm to be exact. The attached picture is just a sketch I did on Sketchup. The real thing is on my mill table. I haven't finished pocketing the hole yet. Had to pop off to work. But will finish the pocket by this evening.

I have to admit, as long as the bolt is securely fastened and as little play as possible, the cut is really neat and clean. I sprayed WD40 while it was cutting. I haven't got photos yet as I had to rush off. But will put up photos this evening to show you what I mean.

Edit: Make sure you provide double nuts on the bolt so you can still turn the work piece. By hand. Oh another thing. This is not a safe way of pocketing so do it care and at your own risk. Thanks.

I have made slightly more sophisticated versions of this device for putting semicircular ends on flat bar on a production basis.

One bit of advice: Put a stop that your lever comes up against and start the cut from here. This way if something grabs and pulls the lever out of your hands it can only unwind back to the stop.

On second cuts make sure you are conventional milling NOT CLIMB MILLING. This way you are pushing the material into the cutter and it cannot grab.

Hi Geof,

Thanks for the advice. Will apply that when I do next round of pocketing. I have just a few more before I leave the work to the CNC mill.
