It is my understanding that when they started the machine shop I work in that Lawson came in and set up all cutting tools with indexes, bins and cabinets. They placed us on a consignment basis for a period of one year, removed any unused tools and only billed for the cutting tools that had been used from the indexes when the salesman replaced them on his weekly visit. After 1 yr they had a usage rate for the tools being used, removed the excess and maintained the levels assuming that they did bill for what hadn't been paid for yet. Lawson still services our fab shop and machine shop although I use MSC a lot too.
I don't know if Lawson still offers this program or not but it would be worth checking into. Don't know if this makes a difference for you but it does for us, Lawson's parent company is a minority owned business and some of our customers require we purchase x% of our supplies for their jobs from a minority business so...
Their website is www.lawsonproducts.com Some of their products I like better than others, like their drill bits which are pretty good as are their hand taps and dies. The sales people are of course setting your sales pricing tier so at the end of the year it is time to talk turkey on pricing. As far as indexed tooling they carry a few name brands and sometimes will beat MSCs pricing on the tooling by $10-$15 dollars and when tooling up that means a lot.
Hope this helps,
Scott
