Covering shop floor

I’d like to cover my basement carpet with some tiles or laminate floor. Currently I have a small benchtop mill (MaxNC) which is fully enclosed so my carpet is not messed up. But I want to buy a bigger mill the X3-Syil conversion and I think for this kind of mill carpet is not appropriate and I want to cover it somehow. I cannot remove the carpet because I’m renting the townhome. I went to IKEA the other day and seen some nice plastic tiles for $3.5/square foot. The mill is about 250Kgs and will be enclosed ( I’m planning to build the enclosure myself). The area I need to cover is about 120 square foot. I welcome any suggestions.

Thanks,
James

Why not, just remove the carpet (I'm sure you have a slab under it.)?

Wouldn't it cost less, to hire someone to re-install the carpet when/If you move later on?

The landlord would never know.

Just put it back like it was when you moved in.

$3.50/ft^2 Are you sure it wasn't per square meter, or at least per square yard? And they're not even ceramic tiles! $3.50 per square foot is one single piece of 12x12 inch plastic. You'd pay that for quite a nice ceramic tile. That's a crazy price. Just buy a few large plastic or rubber mats, but dont spend that much on plastic tiles. Is it just me??? How 'nice' exactly were these tiles? Are you looking for something basic to cover the carpet, or something 'nice' ? Buy a roll of linoleum maybe, would that be cheaper? To cover 120ft^2 of someone else's floor and probably break/lose/dump half the tiles when you move out seems like a bit of a waste of money.

Thanks for your advices. I'm really not comfortable removing the carpet.
Yes the IKEA ones look nice but it was a bit too expensive. The linoleum might be an option I'll check how much it would cost. I wanted something firm too but not willing to spend $500 on tiles.

Thanks again,
James

I had this same problem years ago when I rented also. I first went and got some heavy plastic drop cloths and cover the carpets and then I cover the carpet with some thin plywood fitted to go wall to wall. then I had some very heavy tape to do the seams. Worked great, no chips and easy to sweep clean. Best part was when I left the plywood was use in the new shop to make shelfs.(make sure the plastic wraps the outside edge at the wall so the plywood won't scuff the trim)
