I have been working as a machinist for over 14 yrs on and off . Ran manual mills and lathes , CNC mills and lathes . From mechanical screw machines to 4 axis lathe . Most experience being on a lathe . I now work on some retrofitted VTL's made as early as 1950 . The largest having a 62" table with a height under the ram of 74" and a stroke of 60" . The parts I recently been working on weigh upwards of 3500lbs . The smallest I have made in the last 3 yrs. is 100lbs . Mostly aluminum and some stainless and steel .

Part in the pic is a damaged pump from the gulf . Last years hurricane and salt water did it in before it was ever used . There went a couple million dollars . There was 32 of them from Exxon . I wondered why we pay so much for gas.

I have programmed and run cnc mills and routers for 10 years. I have also worked with manuel lathe and mills for many years. I worked for 6 1/2 years in plastic fab and machining. I had two jobs for along time. The second job I started while still working in plastics was machining metals like brass, bronze, and steel. There I made prototypes and molds for a product researh company for 5 years. The last job was machining granite and marble on large cnc routers(think giant gantry mill) for 2 1/2 years(I'm very good at working with stone but hate it). I don't know where i'd fit on the pole? There are many interesting people with great backgrounds on this site! Judleroy

Sure...7000 series Aluminum just has some Tin thrown in.

No big deal just spend some money on micro grain carbides made for aluminum. I like
3 flute end mills myself for they are more rigid them slot drills. Usually I run them faster
than I drive home on the highway for for T6061 (more than 6000 ft/min) but for 7000 series I slow down to about 1000 ft. / min. That would be about 7600 for a half inch end mill.

There are coolants as well for aluminum. Back in the days when I used to do flight actuation manifolds from aluminum, we used to use a coolant called Almag. It's light oil and kerosene. Just don't make any sparks where facing and creating a fine mist are concerned as my buddy Berry found out one day years ago. If in doubt there's always Trimsol at 1 to 5 dilution instead of the usual 1 to 20 parts water.
