I was not aware that felt marker could be used in the same way as the surface plate. I think I've made a pretty big misunderdasting...

When I initially started back in June, Hans told is to use a black marker to mark the low-spots. Everyone assumed he meant in combination with the blue--the idea was that the black was the low spots, and the blue were the high-spots. So it wasn't until just recentely that I found out the high-spots are actually those shiny spots.

How excantly can the marker be used in the same way? My classmates get frustrated, and easily forget to wipe their plate of chips before putting it on the surface plate. This usually results in only messing up whatever result you get out of it, but at times you will get a scratch on your surace, or even on your surface plate.

So, it would be nice if I could use my own marker to mark where I need to file. Or did I misunderstand?

Merely use the following steps steps:

1. Wipe down surface to remove oil/debris

2. Color completely the surface to be filed/lapped with magic
marker (yours or anybody's). By using marker ONLY, it is less messy and/or confusing.

3. Lap against known flat surface (surface plate, glass, whatever). If you are filing, the file should only cut the HIGH spots.

4. The spots where the marker traces was/were REMOVED was originally HIGH (above surrounding LOW) and needs to be filed down more. The remaining COLORED spots are low which is the level you are trying to get everthing to when you're done.

5. Repeat 1 thru 4 as needed.

6. When ALL the surface is SILVER, you'd made high spots same level as low and are effectively done.

Can't make it any simpler....

Thanks for making it so clear cut... It's kind of hard for me to understand in that shop, it's very loud, I have a hearing impairment, and my instructor is German. So much miscommunication... I actually seriously thought about carrying around a note-pad, and jotting down questions, but my penmanship is terrible, too. So, yeah, it's a pretty big challenge for me to understand simple concepts like this.

That's all right, though, 'cause I've got this place to help me out.

people here are very helpfull so ask away, I like the note pad idea, for the obvious reason but also because it'll prompt others around you to be a little more carefull that you are able to hear what they're saying
