    Mill Scale Removal

I have a large sign ( 4' x 16' ) made of steel and I need to find some better way to take off mill scale. I usually do my small pieces in a muratic acid bath, however this project is too big. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Depends on what finish you want when you are done. Sand blast. Needle de-scaler. Grinder/sander.

Thanks for the reply. I can't sandblast and grinding is going to be a long processs. What is the needle de-scaler.

A needle decaler will take you forever.

Gey yourself a 7 or 9 inch grinder, fit it with a sanding disk, a pack of spare sanding disks... and a cold six pack of sodas.

Try to work in the shade and set aside 1-2 hours depending on how bad the scale is.

It's just work. You don't mind, it don't matter.

That is a big sign. If you can get it to a position where acid fumes are not a problem, then in theory you can use a pump and recirculate the acid over it using a hose and pump. That is easier said than done.

There are some products like naval jelly that will convert the rust to a more stable compound, but it depends on the condition of the surface. It is more for light rust than heavy scale.

There are some sandblaster setups that will catch the dust while you work if that is the issue. Perhaps make a box that fits over a section of the sign at a time if you want to DIY.
