Deep Hole drilling in 316 Stainless

I have a job pending that requires a thru hole of .070 dia X 6.5 inches deep, in 316 Stainless Steel. The challenges seem numerous, any advice would be greatly appreciated. My shop uses Mastercam X5 for CAM.
    Thanks

EDM might be the way to go. I do not even recall seeing a drill in that diameter range with that kind of length. You are talking 95X.

txcncman is correct. Tubular flushing electrode would do it.

    I think you're right

We are trying to avoid an extra operation, and or outside processing. The part will be machined on a Horizontal Machine, and we're trying to keep the setups to 2.

Trying to avoid and able to avoid are two different scenarios. If you can find drill long enough, try it. Let us know how it turns out.

you could use a gun drill , but the time involved is a cost that would probably need to be balanced to the cost of doing what has been previously mentioned .

Yes, gundrill. Sterling has some really smal ones. I recall using the same size drill and drilling about 8" deep. Just peck it little by litte. It is best if you have thru spindle coolant. If you are using a horozontal mill it would be best to pilot drill it first with s short drill.

That's a pretty small gundrill, .070" dia. Gundrills are coolant thru the tool machines.

A drill that size would require pretty high rpm and a guide to prevent whipping.

6.5"/.070" = 93 dia. to length ratio is pretty extreme.

I've used smaller (1/16) , the thing is to start the hole with a pilot then feed the gundrill into the hole before hitting the spindle on , that way it won't whip itself apart

Hey thanks for all the feedback, our machines do not have thru the spindle coolant. I am thinking about pilot drilling with a jobber length drill first, then pecking with the long drill and not retracting completely out of the hole, but maybe .025 below the top.
