Depending on where you are, there's often a metal scrap yard that will have remnants or shorts/drops that are reasonably priced.
Last year I bought a piece of aluminum from Lowes (flat, .125" thick, about 1.0" wide and several feet long).
The aluminum alloy that they sold was 5052. It is generally easy to bend, but it can be a bit gummy to machine.
The way that I determined what alloy they were selling was to look at the color code (painted on the end of the bar). The 5052 bar had a purple code. If they sell any 6061 it should have a blue code.
