| Here's a way to (sorta) fake a worm gear from the inventive amateur astronomers; http://www.geocities.com/kindellism/...orm_Gears.html A bit rough but might be useful to some. Came from this link; http://www.bbastrodesigns.com/cot/mechanic.html |

| Then you have little excuse for not coming to the next BBQ. Normally there are 10 or so of us. We have guys who even come from Geelong, so Cranny is not too far. http://www.cnczone.com/forums/showthread.php?p=108161 |

Someone on CNCzone found my DIY worm gear website and call them "Faked". I was not offended. I understand why they could be "Faked". So for the sake of CNCzone. I stuck with "Faked". Now for you metalworkers, if you slip roll metal threaded rods to get the radius right. They should work just as well. Kindellism |

| There was certainly no offense intended by the word "Faked" as I used it, I thought I was clear in my OP that I regarded it as an inventive idea. There are amateurs (astronomers) that have successfully made worm gears by hobbing them on a lathe setup. Those I would definitely call "DIY Worm Gears" as suggested by posix. I just wanted to distinguish between the two and called Kindellism's idea "Faked" since it requires no machining of the gear form. Thanks for the new link Kindellism. Regards, Zathras |

| with wrapping the threaded rod around a diameter the pitch will be stretched , have you had any issues because of that ?

| Note: I took the "Faked" as a compliment. :-) I had not have any problems yet of the teeth but my gears are least 10" in diameter. In all honestly, I saw the idea on some astronomy projeact from the 70's. It used metal threaded rods. My only claim to frame was using nylon threaded rods. Kindellism |
