Ive never used a dwell in a tapping function but I assume you would add a "Pxx" in your G84 line. P as your dwell code and xx as time. Im not at work to test this so its a stab in the dark atm.
Hi, I have a Kennametal Tapping head from the NC-0 serie.
Capacity up to 1/4 or M7
I have the quick change torque control serie set for metric.
I have little bit of instruction but not much.
NC-0 have .250'' extension.
Instruction says that the programmed feed on CNC should be 95% of the correct feed for a particular tap.
There's a dwell time formula which is: (Self-feed distance X tap pitch X 60) divided by RPM.
I have a Haas TM-1P and use Mastercam to produce my program and always use tha tap option in the drill parameter page when tapping.
Could someone help me and give some instruction for bling hole and through hole tapping, I never use the collet with torque control system either.
I have another Lyndex tapping head but with no torque control and only with imperial set of collet from #4 to 1/2 tap.
Thanks a lot, Jeff

Through Hole tapping
1 turn machine on to required RPM
2 set machine feed to 95% of tap lead.
3 feed tap into drilled hole.
4 when the desired depth is reach ,reverse the mach spindle. Retract from the hole at 95% of the tap lead
Controlled – depth Tapping
1 Turn machine spindle at required RPM.
2 Set machine feed to 95% of tap lead.
3 Set feed stop depth to required thread depth minus the length of tension stroke.
4 Feed the tap into the hole. When it reaches the feed stop depth, continue to rotate the spindle. The inner slide of the tap chuck will be pulled toward the work piece by the tap. The tap will continue to feed itself into the hole for the length of the tension stroke. At the end of this length, the drive mechanism will release into neutral and thetap to spin fre and stop cutting.
5 Reverse the spindle to thread tap out of hole. Set machine feed to 95% of tap lead.
Example of feed stop
Required thread depth = 1 inch
Tension stroke = .125
Feed stop depth = .875
Hi, sorry for the late reply, really appreciate your help.
Will try what you said.

I know you put what tap heads your using but a word to the wise. Only use a percentage of tap speed (IE 95%) if your tap head is floating (IE it is a spring style collet).
I only mention this because I've hired guys that had years of experience that didn't know this and constantly broke taps in ridged holders with 95% feed when it should be 100% in a ridged!
thanks

Thanks, I was aware about the 95% of feed, I have other floating tapping head
but only this one use torque control collet and not sure what will happen if the
torque control engage and the spindle still spinning and Z axis still moving.
Also collet are labelled SESO-... and can't find any good info about it only partial information, they are metric one.

If it's the type of tap Head I'm thinking of with torque control (like on a manual tap head) then I personal would be very cautious in a CNC environment....they blow up easily if the tap slips do to torque miss-match.
But I'm sure you got that handled just being a nervous nelly! =)
thanks
