    Machining lexan

    Hello all,

My question is What is the best way to machine lexan and get the best surface finish? Small ball tool or large tool. I am cutting a lens in a makino v22. The part .5in x .5in. Also any step overs.

really really sharp tools, lots of cool.

For anyone wanting to polish polycarbonates...this might be of interest. It relates primarily to visors..

Either use HSS sharpened to a really keen edge with a few degrees of top rake or get something like the Iscar insert in the picture below. And as mentioned lots of coolant. Use same speed as you would for brass.

An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.
