Question Qeustion of lubication experiences?

I recently started a new job making gears and drive train components. Last week a drive shaft part had to have a slot milled down one side. The shaft had already had the splines milled as well as turned to I.D. The fun part is that came to me at full hardened state (I don't know the R.C.).

Now here were it get interesting. Solid carbide end mills were used (about Ø.125), but the normal water emulsified coolant was NOT. Instead a mister was used, but instead a vegetable oil was used. Not any special vegetable oil, just off the shelf stuff. Not a heavy mist, very light mist. And from what I was told it is the only lubricant that works in this case.

Any one else have similar experiences like this?

I've been in the cutting game for 51 years, and never tried veg. oil.

Although, I have been guilty of making the shops smell very delicious, by tapping with Bacon flavored Crisco. Yummy!

We removed chrome plating from copper printing rolls (quite a combination) with diamond tipped inserts. Had a copper build-up problem at first. Problem solved with a spray can of PAM vegetable oil spray.

PAM can discolor copper. We super finished after turning and grinding.

Some water soluble coolants are made with Jojoba beans as well. Then there's Castor oil from Castor beans.
