breaking taps in aluminum

Tap Size: 10-24
Material: T6 60601 Aluminum
Thread depth: .8 in
Pilot Dept: 1.125 in

Im using high pressure flood coolant and tapping pretty conservatively ( RPM 150 and Feed at 6.25 SFM 7.46) Im pilot drilling the recommended #25 drill and am still breaking taps. Im using a straight flute plug style tap.

Thanks for any help in advance

You're tapping to slow, try 25-60 sfm. sfm*3.82/tap diameter = spindle speed. Also peck tap it, and maybe use cutting oil to lube the holes.

A spiral flute tap will help too by directing the chips up and out of the hole...
The 2 types of spiral give you chips up, or chips down, depending on the direction of the flute's helix.

....Make sure the holes are CLEAR OF CHIPS before running the tap in, especially with a straight flute tap.

You should be able to run that tap at 800-1500 rpm all day long with a good quality coolant.
