I am in the process of putting together my workshop and deciding which equipment to buy. I am new to machining and willing to jump in with both feet.
My requirements are as follows:
I wish to be able to CNC gears for clocks in sizes from around 2" to 18" in diameter out of brass ranging from approx 3mm to 12mm thick.
Not only do I want to machine the teeth for the gears I also want to machine intricate details in the centre of each.
From my research the setup I envisaged was a CNC router (currently looking at a Larken Camtool 2424) use some cement to stick the brass to some mdf, design the work in Adobe Illustrator, export to DXF, then hopefully flick a switch and watch it all get cut out. I know there is more to it than that...
Firstly I need a sanity check, is this all feasable?
Will I be able to CNC the fine details of the teeth to a high enough quality?
What specs should i be looking for in the motor to use with my router?
Can you think of a better way to automate the whole process? (Please bare in mind my limited practical experience)
Anything else I am going to need to know? (Including books and websites which could help.)
