Hey I'm from a High School Robotics team. We make 15lb robots to fight. We are trying to mill Titanium for a part we need. I have read the HSS bits can be better to use for milling Ti, is this true? Also what would should we use for speeds and feeds? We have a tormach PCNC 1100, we are pretty comfortable milling aluminum and mild steel. Any help at all would be awesome. Here is our youtube channel, check it out! YouTube - hhsrobotics's Channel Thanks! |

| Carbide all the way, use coolant too. A good coating will help, such as TiCN or TiAlN. Most of the main tool manufactureres will have carbide end mills made for Titanium. Don't *****foot around, slower speeds and a decent chipload. No dwelling at all, this stuff workhardens like nothing else. Drilling we use coolant fed drills. I like Guhring (drills/mills) or Helical Solutions (end mills). Follow manufacturer recomendations for speeds and feeds. In a pinch I use 180 sfpm for mills and .001 -.003 ipt for mills. It depends on the size, check the recomendations first. I cut titanium all day long and it isn't that hard. Easier than some of the stainless we have to cut. Sharp cutters and no dwelling.
