I want to cut a 90* V groove in some 6061 aluminum. the groove will be .125" deep. can I use a spot drill like an endmill (the spot drill has one flute)? What RPM and feed? Here is a picture from a simulation software (vericut) ![]() It's the Audi logo, I'm doing it for a friend. I decided to do it by cutting two V-grooves alongside each other to make a /\ cross section. Then I'll mill the back off to the level of the V point to remove the rings from the rest of the stock. Any advice? |

| Spot drills work well to chamfer edges. The problem with your application is the center does not cut well and also will leave an ugly flaky flat in the center. Even single flute engraving tools have a flat, but without the flaky finish. What you propose will work, but the finish may not be acceptable. |

| What's worse, I met up with one of the bigwigs from Melin at WESTEC a couple of years ago, gave him all the particulars, he said he'd look into it and get back to me. Last I ever heard from them. I won't buy Melin anymore. But the single flute engraving tool is really the only way to go. You'll get the smallest flat on the bottom of the groove, and the best surface finish. |
