To all masters and sifus out there please help me on which tools ans accessories to purchase for beginner. I am purchasing a mini vertical mill similar to Seig X2. I am doing some aluminium parts. 1) What kind of milling bits should I purchase? (Rounding corner, slots etc) 2) Should I purchase quick conect R8 Chuck and collet? (Which type and size) 3) Other ensential tools like sanding or smoothing edge, cutting tools etc. Your advice is very much appreciated. Thanks |

| Your question is too vague so the answers will be too long. A better way is to ask How do i make this and what tools would i need to make it but remember i am on a budget. Look for stuff on ebay if available to your country But to get the ball rolling you need Collets Drill chuck Machine vice Range of drills Range of cutters Measuring/setting devices |

I am doing some aluminium & plastic material. Will be making some slots, holes and threads To mill slots do I use end mill size same as the slot or use smaller size to do a few runs? What tool can make a specific angle (degree) countersink for a 15mm hole? How do I mill corner or half outer round? Collets>>>>> like ER16 etc? Drill chuck >>>>> R8 Quick connect? Machine vice >>>>> Rotable or fix? Range of drills >>> this I understand Range of cutters >>> end mill? indexable? Measuring/setting devices >>>> this I understand Thanks again |

| The collets depend on your machine spindle an R8 is the better choice. If it has an R8 then you will need R8 collets or if is morse taper you can get morse taper collets Or you could get a collet chuck for a morse taper and use er collets depending on the size of the holder and yes they are available in to suit R8 So you can see there is a lot of choice and some people have some of each. The vice can be swivel and or tilting but they tend to be less rigid and take up more space and on a small machine they can eat up all your capacity and cost more but you can have both and again some people do. You always use a smaller cutter if you want precision for the slot very popular are three flute cutters as they have advantages of end mills and slot drills Indexable only come in the larger sizes Carbide is longer lasting and works good on ali, HSS can have a sharper edge and may suit plastic better. For countersinking you need a countersink, they are available in lots of sizes. But like rules, they are meant to be broken You can do a search on ebay then you can see what is available, and what they cost. |

| On a manual mill there are rotary tables and also corner rounding cutters. The corner rounding cutters are the easiest but the angles are a maximum of 90 degrees and large radii are not readily available. The exact method would depend on the part. |
