We are looking for a manual metal lathe and was wondering which lathes are better. I am looking for a used lathe with a DRO that can turn small to medium parts. We are low on space so size is a factor. I am looking on craigslist and the classifieds here and just wanted to know what to look for and things to check when I am looking. I have used a medium size Enco manual lathe before, but I am no expert by any means. Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated. |

| Medium is a relative statement. To me, small equates to desk top machines; medium is from there to 24" X 240 "CC. Large is above that. Basically meaningless.LOL What's the dimensions of the "medium" lathe you're interested in? Dick Z

| Medium meaning in a 1.50" to 2.00" through bore and 10" swing over bed. Might turn some turbo compressor housings, but that would be the largest. Mostly making fabrication stuff like threaded weld aluminum bungs, standoffs, modifying A/N fittings, etc... |

| The old Colchester lathes might be suitable. I got a Colchester Bantam and it's footprint is fairly small compared to what it can do. I DRO'd it and it's a handy little machine.
