Need Help!- Can encoders be cleaned?

I have a Centroid M15 with SEM motors and on the Y and Z axis motors they have the original SEM encoders and few years ago I replaced the X axis encoder with a Danher Controls encoder from Ajax. I recently moved my shop and seems both the Z and Y encoders stopped working as I put the Danaher encoder on the Z and Y axis motors and they work so I know it is the encoder. My question is do the encoders just need a cleaning and why would both act up at the same time? The Y axis does work on and off but I cannot trust it like that. Just wondering if the encoders can be cleaned or do I just replace them? Problem is with all the moving and no work going out money is pretty tight. If it is the encoder disc that needs cleaning it can be done with a lint free cloth and de-natured alcohol, or get some lens cleaner from a local optician.
