Hello everybody. I am working on some bronze bushings in my 2 Axis lathe; and im having some issues getting a decent surface finish on my ID Bore. I cant seem to get a smooth enough finish for me to even inspect it with a gauge pin for size. My feeds and speeds were varying all over the place; I kept trying different things, but to no avail. I am using a little high speed steel boring bar right now, maybe I should switch to carbide? Any help with Feed/speed/tooling would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance, im sure you guys will come up with some info. |

| Don't know anything about teh rigidity of your machine and toolpost as that can be a big factor in the finish. Also don't have any idea of the type of bronze you are cutting. With that being said your tool should minimal to no backrake for cutting bronze. It can be a 'grabby' material and end up tearing more than cutting. I would try to use as wide a radius on the tool as you can with a stoned or honed edge on your HSS. If you use carbide us a C2 grade with a larger radius. Reference some SFM charts against your diameter of part for the proper RPM. |
