I have a new 40x30x10 shop I am considering getting a port-a-cool unit. The heat and humidity here is killer. I am worried about my lumber and metal tools and machines rusting. And advice, or information is greatly appreciated.

| Is your shop adequately insulated? If so, air conditioning will act as a dehumidifier. The heat will have to be removed from the shop rather than recirculating within. Otherwise you will have concentrated indoor heat that has some moisture removed by the coolers coils. You can recirculate the cool dehumidified air for best economy. Better efficiency if you do not have to cool outside air coming in. Dick Z

| I am not sure about adequately but It has double bubble radiant insulation and I am installing currening R-19 6" batts in the walls and possibly the celiing as well. I was thinking about getting a 28,000 btu window unit as it says it will handle about 1900 sq feet, and I my shop is only 1200. Not looking for 72 degreens but 85 or less would be nice. 100 degrees wiht a heat index of 110 is just to much in the summer here.

| I have a 40x20x10 shop. I insulated the roof with R-28 and the walls with R-12. I am using 2, small 5200btu window Air conditioners, I have a third on hand if its needed, as the outdoor temps can reach 40deg C (104deg F) So far its been working just fine, and for $90 each the price was right. Probably not the most energy efficient but each one only pulls 3-4amps if I remember correctly. I also have 3- 9x10' garage doors in my shop that are old and not insulated. I would think that 28,000btu of cooling would be excessive if you had your shop well insulated. I also have a 40,000btu NG heater which kept my shop toasty warm all winter. |
