Hi everyone, I need to turn threads into a portion of a standard socket wrench extension. The material is chrome/vanadium. I need to turn it down from .482" to .372" then turn threads into it. I tried it tonight and promptly destroyed an insert. Can anyone give me information on: - Feeds and speeds - type of inserts to use - do I use coolant with it? Any other information on how to do this would also be appreciated. Thanks, Wade |

| It sounds like the turning tool broke before you even got to the thread. If this is the case grind the square off or grind it roughly round, even with a bench grinder and then finish turn. A spin indexer on a surface grinder would be a good alternative. Try turning at 300 RPM (35 SFM) with a 0.002 Feed Rate. Like always these are just starting suggestions. Thread at 100 RPM (9 SFM) with flood coolant or cutting oil applied with a brush. Good rigidity is very important with this type of work. Welding a bolt into a socket may also be an alternative. |
