Exclamation Small Hole Drilling

I am drilling a .005 hole in 316 SST .020 deep. I will be running this job in a Mori Seiki with a 10000 RPM spindle. This will be the smallest hole I have ever drilled. I was wondering if anyone can help me with some feeds, speeds and peck depth. Do I need to spot the hole? Any help would be appreciated.

Dude it sucks to be you LOL

on my omni's the smallest I have gone was .007-.008 it was about .100 depth in 304ss.
we did wire holes for years on the hand mills and cnc mills using a wire hole jig and bushings ( very important) with the wire hole jig no spot drill was requiered but it was guided.

on the omniturns I usually left the face about .010-.020 longer incase the drill walked then recut the face after drilling and run a slow pass to clean out the hole from the facing operation.

if I remember correctly my RPMS were around 1000 my feed was .0002-.0003ipr and the pecks( deep hole) were around .010. I only ran oil never coolant in small holes.
304 isnt bad as 316 but I have no experiance in drilling 316 that small. the bright side is that you have very little depth to drill.
if its a through hole becareful cause the drill likes to break on small drills and through holes.
one other thing make sure you chuck up on as much drill as you can, I use a very small keyless chuck in a bushing on the machine, if need be I cut the back end of the drill off so I can leave as little as possible hanging out.
I dont know if they make a collet that small but it would be worth looking into. ( by a reputable manufactuer)

Good Luck
