Thanks in advance. I am looking for other opinions on selecting a cut off insert. I am tired of debating with co-workers about this issue. We have had the tool guy(s) in thinking this would get all of us on the same page, we still cannot get in the same book. I guess i am looking for others input on selecting a cut off insert for "parting with a thru hole" and "parting from solid". Thanks again. |

| depends how ridgid your machine is, and what size diameter you talking about? also what material you using? I run 2 lathes here with constant parting off.. for less than 40mm dia I use: Iscar Insert DGR 2202J-15D the grade is IC328 (its 2.2mm 15 degrees on tip which gives little tit on the back of job its parting insert for Stainless materials). for hard material you might wana think IC908 or 907.. let me know what speeds and feeds you are using also... |

| Thanks. We have now went to two Iscar inserts. 15 deg and straight. I really hope this will help us all meet on common ground in the shop. It is at the point one guy will set up a machine, get about 200 parts off the machine, at change over, the next guy will switch to another style insert. Thanks for your inout. |

| And...does your lathe have a sub-spindle pick-off or does it drop the finished part from the main spindle into a parts catcher? If a single-spindle machine, how important is the "cutoff tit"? You've already bought Iscar, so your stuck with that holder until it blows up. Good luck. BTW, AFAIK, there is no IC907 for cutoff, just IC908, and it's pretty good for cutoff of stainless steels and high temp alloys. Heck, it's pretty good for anything. I think the IC907 is just a turning grade. I've been using Valenite VTG (double ended) and VSG (single ended) inserts in their PG chipbreaker and 5820 grade. Awesome, best chip control I've ever seen. |
