Why buy a lathe just to retrofit it if you could simply buy a CNC lathe? I've seen decent ones for under $5K, and a friend of mine has one for sale. There are a lot of distinct advantages to buying a machine that was built for the purpose vs. changing an existing one. For instance, slant bed ways and enclosures, tool-changing turrets and no need to tune servos and spindles. You'd have feed-per-rev and threading right off the bat too, something you wouldn't get on that Grizzly without adding a spindle encoder.

Hi HG. The G0602 is an EXCELLENT candidate for CNC. It's a shame, that you will have to remove a lot of its parts, but the ultimate frame is a great CNC lathe. You should be able to CNC it for under $2K--including the lathe.

    Here's my electronics recommendation:

CR - nice site. good info there. What gearing/ballscrew pitch are you recommending (if any) for driving the G0602 with the KL23H2100-35-4B 381 oz in motors?

I'm building a small lathe ( Granite surface plate lathe ) My ballscrews are Z: 4mm(.1575")/rev, X:2.5mm(.0984")/rev. I'm planning on direct driving the screws. I'm not sure how to figure out how much torque I need. Do you think I could direct drive with the 381 oz in motors?

    Will

Hi Will. That lathe is an impressive project!

I'm using 5/8" 5 TPI BS, with 1:1 drive, which is the same as direct drive ratio. The 381s are super fast.

You will be using roughly 6TPI and 10 TPI screws--Pretty much in the same ball park. The 381 with 50V and a G540 should give some decent rapids with those linear slides--X will just be a little slower with higher resolution.
