Hi, I came here looking for the same answers, but found you instead Lots of folks/hobby toys use steppers without issue, but I don't like an "open" system, so its servos for me - not questioning others, just happy with my preference.

I have the Grizzly 12x37 gap bed lathe, and am converting to Servo's. I already converted my Grizzly 1006 Mill drill, using servos and acme screws from McMaster, and am now changing those out for a better setup (they worked good for 8 years of light hobby use. I guess I can't complain too much, though in real production use they wouldn't have lasted a month I bet!).

Anyway to answer your questions, here's what I've done/I'm doing:
> Camtronics 4 axis servo controller/Geckos - I had Dan build it up for me for my mill (not as a kit). Have had it for 8 years without the slightest issue. I'm going to put it on a cart and use for both lathe and mill to save some serious $.

> Z-axis, I'm using RM2505 ballscrews from China (linearmotion on fleabay), with proper endblocks (dual angular contact bearings) and mounts. RM2505=25mm screw, 5mm pitch. The "real" stuff is stupid expensive, so this will have to do. Still better than my acme/thompson setup I had done on the mill using the stock end play bearings - I'll be re-doing my mill with the same stuff (ebay vendor) - just sent an email for a quote earlier today. They offer the "BK15" mounts for the 25mm screw, but other references say it should be the BK17 (Bigger) - I went with those.

> X-axis, RM1605, mounted in front, floating on the back end (no radial rear mount), BK/BF12 bearing mounts

> Trying to decide motors and drives (this is where I was looking for advice) - I have pretty small servos on my mill, but they work great at 1:3 drive with XL pulleys. Thinking I'll use Kelling 1100oz servo at 1:3 and XL pulleys for z, and probably the 800 or maybe 600 for the x drive, also at 1:3, probably using 24x72 tooth pulleys. with those motors and voltage I have (60v?) its still over 100ipm traverse which is plenty for my home use.

> I completely stripped off the axis drive system, power feed, and lower part of the saddle from the lathe, and will only operate this under CNC power, using a jog wheel to simulate manual if I need it. Where the feed gearbox was, I'll have the z-axis motor, mount, and "fixed" drive end (pulleys hanging just past the end of the lathe. Designing the screw machining and brackets was a "treat" (not!).... Hopefully I did it all right...

Thing I'm not clear on is if the XL belts will be up to it. They will be short, and the actual force on them will be a fair bit less than my mill which has worked flawlessly for years, so probably no big deal. I also wasn't sure how big a motor I need, but since they are only a few bux difference in price, may as well get the bigger ones.

I hope to order the screws, motors and pulleys next week, and have the project done in a couple months (will take a while to get the parts from China, and I won't finish the mount design until I have the parts in hand)... I need to get it done ASAP, as racing season is coming up fast! (sports car/road racing)

Good luck with your project - keep us posted...
